Dramatic
changes over the course of three generations

in his 'office' at the DRUPA 2004. The office room was named
after his grandfather Emil Lumbeck, the inventor of the "fan
glue binding process" in the year 1930. |
My name
is Hans-Dieter Ehlermann. I have created this web site to offer
my expertise after more than 35 years working in the field of bookbinding
and developing the special system of perfect binding. I have been
following in the steps of my forefathers: my grandfather Emil
Lumbeck invented the "fan glue binding process" in the
year 1930, and my father Hans Ehlermann produced hand binding
units and later semiautomatic perfect binders using the fan binding
process with cold glue applications (PVA glues) in the 60s and 70s.
In the
meantime, the world of binding and gathering machines has dramatically
changed. During these "old" days semiautomatic binders produced
approximately 800 books/hour - but today, state-of-the-art machines
are manufacturing up to 18,000 books/hour. Furthermore, the machine
output is even heading towards 30,000 - 35,000 books/hour when books
are produced in 2-up-size (for example paperbacks or schoolbooks).
This means working in two shifts and a production possibility of
up to 500,000 books/day!
Development
of the world's leading binder program
1983: Merging of Ehlermann GmbH with Wohlenberg,
Germany, the world's leading manufacturer for paper cutters and
3 - knife trimmers. We started designing the new generation of perfect
binders, which are now the world's leading binder program with a
machine speed from 2000 - 8000 c/h.
1990: Wohlenberg introduced the new generation of Golf-binders
with a max. speed of 6000 c/h on the DRUPA (largest exhibition of
the graphic industry world-wide) for the first time. Since we have
sold more than 300 Golfbinder lines to international clients.
DRUPA 1995: Wohlenberg introduced the first Champion 7000
with semiautomatic size changeover, the Master 6501 and the City
4000. These new models ideally filled the gap in the binder program
for max. 4000 - 7000 c/h. Also, all machines were equipped based
on the new CE-regulations with PLC-systems for fault control and
job administration.
The new
software bind com 1 ® was also shown on the DRUPA 95 exhibition
for the first time. This software is supporting all work preparation
before the binding and during the binding process.
DRUPA 2000 - On this remarkable exhibition at the beginning
of the new century, Wohlenberg gave a strong push to the graphic
industry by developing the first fully motorized perfect binders
in the world. The new generation of the Champion "e" model and
the Quickbinder in the range of 8000 c/h and 2000 c/h was acknowledged
by the graphic industry as a "revolution" in the binding process.
Wohlenberg
developed a new software called NAVIGATOR to be used
via coloured, state-of-the-art touch screens.
In the future this software will become standard for all gathering,
binding and trimming machines from Wohlenberg. The extended software
bind com 3 ® is designed for communication with the CIP
3 world for integrating the binding process into the Prepress-Press-Afterpress
work flow.
