The Wohlenberg bind-com®
Technical Control Station for Bookbinding Lines

Small and medium-sized businesses in the print production find themselves exposed to ever increasing competitive pressure. Quality, cost-efficiency, on time delivery, and flexibility are crucial factors for those striving to remain competitive. To support our customers, Wohlenberg Buchbindesysteme developed a Control Station for print production.

bind-com® 2.O features comprise the following functions:

The planning module
All main data of the order are entered and managed here. The pertinent "technical data", i.e. the data related to the product to be processed are subsequently allocated to the aforementioned "commercial" or "order processing" data.

The production module
The primary task of this module is the interactive set-up and monitoring of the machinery. The actual state of the machinery is captured, visualised and logged.

The statistics module
To assess the line's performance data, different features are available for statistical evaluation.

The help functions
bind-com® 2.O includes a comprehensive user support which, among other things, enables the user to call the respective operating instructions for the machines and for bind-com® 2.0.

The maintenance module
The system not only reminds the user of necessary maintenance work, it also supports him in carrying out such work by providing the corresponding maintenance plans.

Remote error check
As an optional feature, a remote error check function to control the complete line from our Verden works via telephone modem can be integrated in the maintenance module.

System Control
Here, the language is converted, and pass words /access rights are allocated to individual users.

Realisation
The system is based on a hardware platform using Windows NT 4.0® as operating system.

Order recording
The utilisation of bind-com® 2. O starts when the order is coming in. At that time, all order-related data and information are entered to be available for further processing by other divisions. Complete customer files, a great variety of search criteria and extensive editing help functions are available.

Already at this stage, the processing method will be defined and an initial job planning schedule determined. Notes for other divisions can be deposited in a memo box.

Machine monitoring With the production module, the machine operator controls a wide spectrum of support functions for a well organised and thus more efficient production. In the freely configurable main window, actual data such as machine speed, number of finished products or glue temperature are indicated. Any interruption is immediate/y displayed and logged accordingly.

Machine management To optimise production it is essential to know the exact operational data of your production line. Because only if you are aware of the weak points in your line will you be able to make improvements and increase productivity.

bind-com® 2.O provides the necessary support and tools that will enable you to achieve a noticeable increase in efficiency.

Order Planning In order to guarantee an optimised workflow and procedure, a number of different tools are available to support job planning functions such as final scheduling based e.g. on format or product type. To locate free manufacturing capacities, an individualized works calendar can be used. The current utilisation rate is calculated and displayed. Machine diagnosis / error check
The machine operator can switch to a diagnosis window, where the location of the failure can be zoomed in on the corresponding illustration. For fast fault clearance the operator may refer to the automatically opened operating instructions or circuit diagram. A window is provided for entering and storing additional information.

Operational data
Information concerning data for defined periods of time such as utilisation time, availability, production time, etc. can be retrieved from the system.

In the progress chart, the actual number of books produced is continuously compared with the theoretically possible output. Such comparison between the set and actual output figures enables the operator intervene at an early stage.

Order-related parameter setting Machine parameter setting to product related values, is carried out at the stage of initial job planning. Here, product dimensions and desired processing stops are predetermined and entered - the rest is done by bind-com® 2.0, which will automatically calculate all machine settings. Now the order can be released for manufacturing. Machine set up
Another module is provided for setting up the machines according to the required format prior to starting production. From different colour markings the machine operator will recognise the machines that need to be reset. At each machine the machine parameter calculated by bind-com® 2. O can be called from control station by pressing the corresponding key. These parameter are thus available for the operator directly at the machine.

All set-up operations are permanently controlled by bind-com® 2.O. An error message will immediately be displayed if the system should detect any deviation liable to cause machine damage.

Statistics
In the Sankey diagram utilisation time is split into data relating to production time, down times, set-up times, etc. These are important data for improving the future efficiency of the line.

Another important feature is the machine down time analysis. It offers a detailed Overview of individual failures that occurred during a given period of time or during the processing of a single order. The information is provided either for a specific machine or for all of the line. A classification according to duration or frequency of failures is also possible

bind-com® 2.O to improve your book binding efficiency

Improved production line transparency

  • The net output is continuously calculated and displayed in a progress chart, which is stored and can be retrieved at a later stage for recalculation.
  • Operating and machine down times are statistically assessed.
  • The order-related production flow is documented - an important feature for ISO 9000 certified companies.
  • In the event of customer complaints, quality proof can be produced.
  • The efficiency rate of the production line during each shift becomes apparent.
  • Interruptions are documented, so that targeted prevention measures can be taken.
  • Error-related retrievals from machine documentation enable down times to be reduced considerably.
  • User administration allows task-related data assess.
  • Optional modem connection for remote machine diagnosis from our Verden works.

Reduced set-up times

  • To facilitate the management of recurring orders, partial orders can be created using pre-stored data to cut set-up times.
  • Orders of high runs can be interrupted to fit in important smaller orders.
  • Order-related basic settings are calculated by bind-com® 2.0 using stored data from former orders.

The production line becomes calculable.

  • Thanks to the integrated order planning function, the workflow can be more effectively controlled.
  • Parameters and data logged in the course of one order are available for subsequent utilisation in follow-up orders.
  • The optional network version enables order planning to be done while the line continues producing.

The aforementioned advantages considerably reduced machine down times in the production lines already installed by us.
